What is your body telling you?

How do we know when our body is asking for something different? Not in a dramatic “transform your life overnight” kind of way, but in the quieter signals many of us start to notice over time. The body has a clever way of whispering to us long before it starts shouting, and whilst pain is common it can also be avoidable.

When we learn to pay attention, it can save us a lot more pain further down the road.

1. Wake up stiffer then when you went to bed

Morning stiffness is incredibly common, especially as we get older, but it is not something you simply have to accept. Research shows that regular movement helps improve circulation to muscles and joints, maintain mobility and reduce the feeling of stiffness that can build up through inactivity and stress.

One of the biggest things we notice in the Studio is that people often think they need to “stretch more”, when actually they need a combination of strength, movement variety and circulation through the joints. This is why so many clients tell us they feel looser after class, even when we haven’t spent the whole hour stretching.

2. Old niggles keep coming back

The shoulder that flares up every few months. The hip that gets grumpy after a long walk. The back that “goes” every time you spend a day gardening.

Pain science has evolved hugely over the last 10–15 years and we now understand that many recurring aches are less about one isolated weak area and more about how the whole body is coping with movement, load, stress, recovery and strength.

This is one of the reasons we focus so much on building whole-body strength at Shape It Up Pilates. Stronger muscles help support joints, improve balance and allow the body to tolerate everyday life more comfortably.

3. You’ve started avoiding things you used to love

This one can creep up quietly. You stop booking walking holidays because your hips ache afterwards. You hesitate before carrying heavy bags. You sit down instead of gardening for long periods. You start saying:
“I can’t do that anymore.”

Often people think this is simply ageing, but in many cases the body has just become deconditioned. The good news is that the body responds incredibly well to appropriate strength and mobility training at almost any age.

One of the most rewarding parts of teaching Pilates is seeing clients return to activities they thought were behind them. Hiking, skiing, running after grandchildren, tennis, getting up and down from the floor more easily…the things that matter.

4. You feel disconnected from your body

Modern life pulls our attention everywhere else: Screens, stress, rushing around, sitting for long periods, constantly thinking about the next thing.

Movement gives us an opportunity to reconnect. Not just physically, but mentally too. Studies consistently show that exercise can improve mood, reduce stress and help regulate the nervous system.

This is often why people leave class saying:
“I just feel better.”

Not because every ache has magically disappeared, but because they have spent an hour breathing properly, concentrating, moving and paying attention to themselves for a change.

Sometimes the body is not asking for a complete overhaul. Sometimes it is simply asking for more movement, more strength, more variety and a little more care.
